Hello Readers, Today we will discuss about end mills. An end mill is a type of milling cutter which helps in industrial milling applications.
Now don't think it is the same as a drill bit. There is a difference in its application, geometry and manufacture. Moreover, the drill bit can only cut in the axial direction. But a milling bit can cut in all directions.
End mills are mainly useful in applications such as profile milling, tracer milling, face milling, and plunging.
In this article apart from this, we will discuss types of end mill, feature, material and construction of end mill.

Types of End mills
There are a total of 9 main types of end mills which we are going to discuss in this article.
- Square end mill
- Keyway end mill
- Ball end mill
- Roughing end mill
- Corner radius end mill
- Roughing and finishing end mill
- Corner rounding end mill
- Drill end mill
- Tapered end mill
Square end mill: It mainly helps in general milling applications such as slotting, profiling and plunge cutting.
Keyway end mill: This mill has an undersized cutting diameter. Moreover, it provides a tight fit between the keyway slot they cut and the woodruff key stock.
Ball end mill: This mill mainly helps for slotting and pocketing, milling contoured surfaces. Moreover, these mills have round cutting edges which are used in the machining dies and molds.
Roughing end mill: This mill is also known as hog mills. Moreover, it helps in the quick removal of a large amount of material during heavier operations.
Corner radius end mill: This mill has a round cutting edge. It is used where a specific radius size is required. Moreover, it provides a longer tool life.
Roughing and Finishing end mill: This mill helps in various milling applications. Moreover, it removes heavy material and provides a smooth finish in a single pass.
Corner rounding end mill: This mill is used for milling rounded edges. Moreover, it has a ground cutting tip that strengthens the end of a tool and reduces the edge chipping.
Drill Mill: It is a multifunctional tool which helps in spotting, drilling, countersinking, chamfering and other various milling operations.
Tapered end mill: It has a cutting edge that tapers at the end. Moreover, it helps in various mold applications.

Features of End mill
The main feature of the end mill includes cutter size and construction area.
Size: size for cutting mill directly relates to the cutting diameter, shank diameter, flute length, tool length and radius dimension.
Construction Option: There are two types of construction option single end and double end.
The single-end mill has a cutting edge flute on one end. Moreover, this is the most common mill end configuration.
Double-end mill have cutting geometry on both ends. So if one ends wear, then the tool can be reversed to use another end.
Material and Coatings
Material is an essential aspect of any end mill. It helps us to understand the level of cutting it can handle. Material like cobalt, carbide, and diamond are very hard. So they are mainly used in high-speed applications.
Other materials like steel mainly help in general metal cutting. Moreover, material like micrograin carbide helps in surface finishing.
The coating can give additional production against corrosion and abrasion. Moreover, it increases tool hardness and provides lubrication assistance. The coating also improves the overall lifetime of the tool.
An end mill is constructed in below four ways:
- Square end: It has a square end with the feature of radius, chamfer and other finish.
- Ball nose: It has a ball nose whose radius is one half of the cutter diameter. Moreover, this machine is useful for machining female semicircle.
- Radius tip: This mill has a straight flute with ground radius on every tip.
- Chamfer tip: This mill has an angled section of the side. Moreover, it produces an angle cut on the chamfered edge of a workpiece.
